It’s hard to believe that the new year is right around the corner; before you know it, 2025 will be a distant memory, and you’ll be making plans and setting goals for 2026. But is your smile ready for the new year?

If you have dental insurance, you could have unused benefits, and you only have until December 31 to take advantage of them.

Let’s explore what you can do now to improve your oral health before ringing in the new year.

How Does Dental Insurance Work?

Most dental insurance plans have a deductible and an annual maximum, and these amounts reset at the end of the calendar year.

Here’s what you need to know about these limits:

  • A deductible is how much you are responsible for before your insurance begins to pay a percentage of your treatment costs.
  • The annual maximum is the most your insurance will pay in any calendar year.

Tips for Maximizing Your Dental Insurance Coverage

Even though you’re busy with holiday plans and activities, it’s worth your time to consider these tips for getting the most from your hard-earned dollars:

  • Contact our office. — Our experienced team can help you navigate your coverage; we’ll file claims on your behalf and explain your coverage options so you can make informed decisions.
  • Schedule routine preventive care. — Most insurance companies pay 100% for exams, cleanings, x-rays, and fluoride treatments even before you’ve met your deductible, so if it has been more than six months since your last checkup, it’s a great idea to take advantage of this benefit.
  • Plan for larger treatments. — If you’ve been putting off any dental work, now might be the right time to think about investing in your oral health. We may be able to schedule part of your treatment in 2025 and the other part in 2026, taking advantage of two years’ worth of benefits. This is especially beneficial if you’ve met your deductible and still have money to spend toward your annual maximum.
